Sarasota Jungle Gardens
One of the oldest continuously operating attractions in Florida, the Sarasota Jungle Gardens was open to the public in December 1940. The Gardens has managed to retain its traditional Florida charm, and changed little in the last sixty-eight years.
The animals at the Jungle Gardens originate from various sources. While some are donated by pet owners who are no longer able to care for them, others were rescued from conditions that were harmful to them. Several rescue organizations have donated rare and endangered birds to the Gardens. The Florida Crocodiles at the Jungle have been labeled, 'species of concern' and are from the St. Augustine Alligator Farm. They are on loan so that they can be used for educational and conservation programs. Other residents of the gardens include tropical birds, owls, hawks, and pythons.
The Gardens consists of 10 acres of tropical vegetation, jungle trails, along with informative and entertaining bird and reptile shows - these are featured twice a day. Meanwhile, the 'Kiddie Jungle' consists of a tree house, tiger swings, a wooden train, haunted tree, and a slide.
If you get hungry while watching the exotic animals at the Jungle Gardens, the Flamingo Café can refresh you with sandwiches, snacks and ice cream. The Café is open from 9 am to 4:30 pm every day. Alternatively, you can bring your own lunch and opt to dine alfresco at one of the picnic tables provided at the Gardens.
While at the Gardens, don't forget to feed the 'free roaming' American Flamingoes. A Flamingo eating out of the palm of your hand is a unique experience in itself - and one kids, in particular, will remember for a long time.
The Jungle Gardens is situated in Sarasota's art district and features over 30 natural exhibits that include exhibits displaying native and exotic wildlife. The highlights at the venue also include five daily educational animal shows. The Gardens has been an attraction for visitors to Sarasota, since 1936. Special shows in December are also part of the celebrations during the holiday season.
In the last sixteen years, a classic 'Punch and Judy' show has been performed as an annual tradition. The Gardens continues to have its appeal despite being a family-oriented, old-fashioned attraction. Tickets are available at the Gardens as a pay-per-use fee, or as part of an yearly membership plan in case you plan to visit often. Some of the children who use the park regularly see the Gardens as their neighborhood park. Special events for kids are also featured during the summer. The Gardens is also available for special events on a limited basis.
The Sarasota Jungle Gardens is the only zoological garden in the area. The venue is a tropical Florida adventure for the whole family with more than 70 species of animals and several thousand exotic plants. Among the other attractions at the Gardens is the Shell Museum, gift shop and the Gardens of Christ.
The Gardens are open from 9 am to 5 pm every day and is closed for Christmas and Thanksgiving. Daily rates for adults are $14, while children pay $13.
